VIDYASAGAR METROPOLITAN COLLEGE

Established in the year 1961
NAAC Accredited  |  Affiliated to Calcutta University

Faculty & Departments - Science - Mathematics

Established in 1969. First Science Hons Department among the Evening Colleges in West Bengal. It was a team work under the proper guidance of Prof. P. R. Ghosh. The other members of the team were Prof. S Das, Prof. P. K. Chaudhuri (left the college in 1975 to join the Department of Applied Mathematics, C.U.), Prof. S. Chatterjee, Prof. S. Sarkar and Prof. S. C. Sarkar. First Evening college to start Science Honours (initially) for the working students. NBHM selected 4 colleges in WB for special lecture (series). We were one of them. Many eminent Mathematicians have given lectures in our college.

Mission and Vision:
  • To help the students get the flavor of the subject along with its philosophy.
  • Mathematics as a tool as well as a basic (subject) discipline. Its applications in other areas.
  • To prepare the students for National Exams as well as job oriented Exams.
  • To motivate the students for higher studies and research.
  • To apply for interdisciplinary project.
  • To start P.G. Course sometimes in next five years.
  • To create a research-oriented environment in the department.
Present Scope:
  • Besides the regular classes allotted in the routine, the departmental teachers take special classes whenever necessary all over the year.
  • Monthly Academic Meet ('Sanibarer Pathshala') is held regularly in collaboration with ISNA. It is open to all. Other than the experts, students are encouraged to give short lectures on the topics according to their choice or necessity.
  • Regular workshops/seminars are organised by the department to help the students interact with the experts of different fields. Speakers are usually selected from different universities, ISI, etc.
  • Students are asked to participate in seminars as well as intercollegiate competitions on Mathematics to gain confidence. Not only that, they are always encouraged to ask questions in the class to make their conception clear.
  • Admission Tests/Interviews are taken for admission.
