Clean and Green Campus Initiatives


- FACILITIES FOR ALTERNATE SOURCES OF ENERGY AND ENERGY CONSERVATION MEASURES:
  • Solar Energy:
    The Institution has facilities for alternate sources of energy and energy conservation measures. Solar energy is the most attractive and abundant form of renewable energy source because it is free, environment friendly and available most of the year. Vidyasagar Metropolitan College installed a 1 kW rooftop solar PV stand alone system (comprising of 8 no. of 12V, 125 Wp SPV modules, Sunshine Solar make) at the rooftop to supply power to LED bulbs of corridors and stairs.

  • Use of LED bulbs/power efficient equipment:
    The power crisis remains a prevalent issue in India, yet the adoption of LED lighting technology presents a promising solution. LED lighting is renowned for its exceptional energy efficiency, offering the potential to revolutionize India's lighting landscape. By leveraging LED technology, we can mitigate power shortages by significantly reducing electrical waste and conserving generated power. LED stands as one of the foremost energy-efficient lighting options available today, boasting longevity, durability, and superior light quality compared to traditional lighting alternatives. With LEDs consuming at least 75% less energy and lasting up to 25 times longer than incandescent bulbs, their widespread implementation holds the key to substantial energy savings across campus facilities.

    Vidyasagar Metropolitan College adopted energy efficient lighting including L.E.D. based Streetlights, Bulbs and Tube lights etc. to promote energy efficiency.


- MANAGEMENT OF VARIOUS TYPES OF DEGRADABLE AND NON-DEGRADABLE WASTE:
  • Solid Waste Management:
    At Vidyasagar Metropolitan College, solid waste is handed over to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, aligning with the Swachh Bharat initiative and the goal of creating a Clean and Green Kolkata. Dustbins are placed at multiple locations in the college for collecting solid waste.
  • E-Waste Recycling:
    Managing e-waste is increasingly important in our technology-driven world, where electronic devices are rapidly produced, used, and discarded. E-waste, which includes discarded computers, smartphones, televisions, and other electronic devices, contains hazardous materials like lead, mercury, and cadmium. Improper disposal of e-waste can lead to serious environmental pollution, contaminating soil, water, and air, and posing health risks to humans and wildlife.

    Proper e-waste management involves recycling and safely disposing of electronic devices to prevent these harmful substances from entering the environment. Recycling e-waste also allows the recovery of valuable materials like gold, silver, and copper, reducing the need for new resource extraction. Additionally, responsible e-waste management supports the circular economy by promoting the reuse and refurbishment of electronics, reducing overall waste.

    In 2022, Vidyasagar Metropolitan College ethically collected, channelized and FRecycled 172.80 kgs of E-waste and was certified for this activity by Hulladek recycling - Electronic Waste Management Company.

  • Further steps taken:
    Vidyasagar Metropolitan College is proud to announce a significant step towards a cleaner and greener campus! We have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Vital Waste, a leading provider of recycling and waste management services.

    This partnership signifies our commitment to sustainable practices and reducing our environmental footprint. Vital Waste will work closely with our college to implement a comprehensive waste management program that includes:
    Effective waste segregation: Clear labelling and designated bins will encourage everyone to properly categorize waste for efficient recycling.

    Streamlined recycling: Vital Waste will ensure efficient collection and processing of recyclable materials like paper, plastic, glass, and metal.

    Sustainable waste disposal: Non-recyclable waste will be disposed of responsibly and in accordance with environmental regulations.

    This collaboration with Vital Waste will not only benefit the environment but also create a cleaner and healthier campus for students, faculty, and staff. We look forward to working together to make Vidyasagar Metropolitan College a model for sustainable waste management practices.

- WATER CONSERVATION FACILITIES:
The artificial aquatic ecosystem at Vidyasagar Metropolitan College serves as a model for water conservation and environmental education. This self-contained system serves a dual purpose, acting as both an attractive focal point and a practical tool for water conservation. The ecosystem functions as a closed-loop system. Water within the system circulates and is naturally filtered through the biological processes of the plants and fish housed within. This filtration process helps to remove impurities and contaminants, ultimately purifying the water. This purified water can then be reused for irrigation purposes on campus grounds, reducing our reliance on fresh water sources. Beyond its practical benefits, the artificial aquatic ecosystem serves as a valuable educational tool. It provides a living example of a self-sustaining ecosystem, fostering an appreciation for the delicate balance within natural systems. Students can observe first hand the interactions between plants and fish, and how these interactions contribute to a healthy environment.

- LANDSCAPING WITH TREES AND PLANTS:

Landscaping with trees and plants plays a crucial role in achieving this goal, offering a multitude of benefits that extend far beyond aesthetics. Trees and plants act as natural air filters, absorbing harmful pollutants like carbon dioxide and releasing life-giving oxygen through photosynthesis. This not only improves the air quality we breathe on campus but also combats climate change by reducing greenhouse gases. Landscaping with a variety of plants offers a feast for the eyes. - BAN ON SINGLE-USE PLASTICS ON CAMPUS:
Vidyasagar Metropolitan College is proud to announce a ban on single-use plastics on campus. This initiative reflects our commitment to environmental responsibility and creating a sustainable future for our college community. Single-use plastics, like bags, bottles, straws, and utensils, pose a significant threat to our environment. They often end up in landfills or our waterways, harming wildlife and polluting ecosystems. These plastics can take centuries to decompose, leaching harmful chemicals into the environment all the while.

By banning single-use plastics at Vidyasagar, we aim to:
  • Reduce Plastic Waste: We'll significantly decrease the amount of plastic waste generated on our campus grounds.
  • Conserve Resources: Plastic production consumes vast amounts of resources like fossil fuels and water. This ban will help conserve these precious resources.

- RESTRICTED ENTRY OF VEHICLES AND AUTOMOBILES:

  • World Environment Day Celebration:
    World Environment Day is celebrated with enthusiasm at Vidyasagar Metropolitan College, in collaboration with the Human Values and Professional Ethics Subcommittee.     During these events, the Teachers' Council, along with individual teachers and students, often donates saplings for planting on campus.   • Best Out of Waste Competition and Students' Seminar:
    To further promote environmental awareness, the Department of Environmental Studies and the Environmental Consciousness and Sustainability Subcommittee regularly organize a Best Out of Waste competition alongside a student seminar in conjunction with Earth Day celebrations. This competition encourages students from various disciplines to create art and functional items from waste materials, highlighting the innovative reuse of non-biodegradable materials.

  • Participation in Urban Climate Film Festival:

Organized by CMS Vatavaran, New Delhi, and supported by the Ministry of Urban Affairs, Government of India, the festival was part of the college's broader efforts to commemorate World Environment Day.
